A DKA Guide to Halloween: The best characters from movies this year to dress up as

Spooky season is in full swing and if you’re like me, you’ve been contemplating your costume. I can’t go as a cat AGAIN, can I? But no fear, like a true DeKA, I’ve turned to movies for inspiration! 2019 has been an amazing year for film, and an even more amazing year for costume designers in film. Here are some costume ideas for the cinematic artist of character inside us all this Halloween.

  1. Rick Dalton and Cliff Booth/Once Upon A Time In Hollywood

Rick Dalton was not only the star of the fictional Western television series, Bounty Law, but he can also be the star of your Halloween party! Any tan jacket and yellow turtleneck are sure to take you back to 1969. For Cliff, you just need a simple Canadian tuxedo-- denim on denim. If this dynamic duo can stop the Manson Family, they can definitely conquer a Halloween party!

2. Amy and Molly/Booksmart

Speaking of dynamic duos, who can forget the kickass Amy and Molly from Olivia Wilde’s directorial debut. On their adventurous night out, the two rock blue jumpsuits. If you want to be future Yale student and class president Molly, you can add a black ascot and a fanny pack to the look. Amy keeps her’s simple with a black beret to top it off. If you really want to get in character, you can spend the entire night constantly complimenting each other’s fabulous outfits. Booksmart? More like BOOksmart!

3. The Wilson Family/Us

If we’re talking jumpsuits we have to mention the most iconic jumpsuits worn in film this year-- the red jumpsuits from Us. This costume will haunt me forever. The fact that there may even be a tethered version of myself below the ground wearing this… terrifying! If you really want to get into the spooky spirit, this red jumpsuit is the way to go. Props are essential to this one; carrying around a pair of scissors while jamming to “I Got 5 On It” can make the outfit. There is one rule: before you go out you must thank Jordan Peele for his genius mind.

Okay, hear me out on this one. If you and any of your friends look alike, you can go as one of the Younger/Older pairings from It Chapter Two. The costumes are pretty easy to pull off since 1989 and 2016 fashion are not too far off from 2019 fashion. To make the costume more obvious, you can carry around a red balloon or even a paper boat. Don’t worry about Pennywise though, he’s dead or at least not coming back for another 27 years!

5. Thanos/Avengers: Endgame

Now, this one requires the most creativity to pull off. But, the reward is you get to walk around all night long, saying, “I am inevitable”. If you’re looking to dress up as the Marvel villain, you’re going to need a lot of various colored face paints. I would recommend painting your face and arms purple while wearing a brown shirt (to look like armor). The crucial part of this outfit is the infinity gauntlet- you can use the other paint to mimic the look of the infinity stones on your hand. But don’t go too overboard with the purple, you don’t want people thinking you’re Barney. However, we are getting a Daniel Kaluuya/Barney movie… so check back next year for tips on that costume!
